This low-lying house on the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne, which sits on a hilltop looking out towards the ocean, features blackened-timber facades that reference local farmhouses.

Melbourne-based architecture studio Carr designed Red Hill Farm House for a site on an area of farmland surrounded by open paddocks that sweep down towards the curving coastline.

The property is embedded in the top of a hill and features a low, elongated form that minimises its visual impact as well as its exposure to the often wild and inhospitable weather.

The house’s design and materiality are influenced by the region’s rural architecture, including its own working stables, and seeks to implement a modern take on this well-established style.

“The volumes are utilitarian in their typology, where function is reduced to a minimum and openings are large and dramatic,” the architects explained. “A monochromatic palette is tempered by the surrounding pastoral landscape.”

The building comprises a series of simple, interconnected volumes that are staggered to follow the topography of the site and respond to the programmatic requirements.

The low-lying profile provides a familiar first impression that is given a modern twist by a roofline that folds and creases to create a series of angular forms influenced by the rugged ranges of the region’s landscape.

“At first hidden from view, the roof line unfolds on approach, revealing itself fully on arrival in a playful origami of angles and immediately announcing the modernist approach taken,” Carr added.

The angled roof features deep eaves to protect the facades from the summer’s strongest sun. The eaves are supported by a colonnade that wraps around the building and provides a vertical rhythm.

Spaces dedicated to different aspects of family life are distributed between three timber-clad pavilions arranged in a U-shape around a central courtyard that evokes the yards found at traditional farmsteads.

The courtyard provides a tranquil and sheltered space at the heart of the house, which is connected to the living areas by corridors lining its edges.
These circulation spaces incorporate large openings at either end that provide views through the building towards the valley beyond and allow breezes to naturally ventilate the interiors.

The use of natural and sustainable rough-sawn, black-stained timber across the exterior creates a cohesive aesthetic that recalls the barns dotted throughout the Mornington Peninsula’s wine region.

The dark facade treatment is echoed in the tone of the kitchen units and fire surround, which contrast with the otherwise light and bright interior.

Polished-concrete flooring and pale timber ceilings introduce warmth and texture to the material palette, while black-framed glazing enhances the views across the countryside.

Located near the shops and not far from the beaches of Palombaggia and Cala Rossa, this beautiful modern and recent villa is signed by the prestigious architecture studio KO. It enjoys a panoramic view of the Gulf and Porto-Vecchio.

A discrete chalet from the outside that “hides his game”. Passing the door, there are large volumes available to us, with a backdrop of a panorama stretching from Rochebrune to Mont d’Arbois with Mont Blanc at its highest point. The living room is distributed around the hearth copper clad metal. The long dining table looks towards the outside and the custom made wine cellar is exposed like a painting. Behind semi-tain doors, the kitchen is like a laboratory clad in soft, clear stone, the island is illuminated by a brushed brass arch. The master suite is punctuated by a geometric wallpaper. The bedroom extends over a dressing room and a bathroom hidden by glass doors enclosing a woven mesh. Skin-clad metal niches encased on the wall serve as a library, and an ethanol-hung fireplace warms the room. The bathroom is dressed in gray marble and a faucet that looks like drops of matte gold. The staircase, central element of the chalet, is animated by a “snow wall” which follows and goes down the steps on three levels. This wall sculpture enlivened by precise lighting guides us to the rooms and the wellness area. The circulation spaces were worked as separate pieces: luxurious fabric niches, geometric wallpaper and wooden rhombuses on the ceiling. The Luxor is a chalet with the perfect balance, between silky materials and geometric shapes.

This Small, Dark-Walled Studio Apartment is Proof that Rules are Made to Be Broken

When decorating a small space, the conventional wisdom is to use light colors to make the space seem as large as possible. But when your small space has high ceilings and great lighting, sometimes you can get away with breaking a few rules — and create a studio apartment with all the style of a much larger home.

This Swedish — of course it’s Swedish — studio has a separate kitchen, and a rather large, high-ceilinged space that serves as both the living room and bedroom. An overall palette of black, white, and neutrals, accented with just a bit of greenery (and a few touches of gold), gives the space a moody, dramatic appeal. The dark walls provide a lovely contrast to the white ceiling and and light-colored floors — and help draw the eye to the room’s intricate moldings.

Besides the high ceilings, another thing that contributes to the apartment’s feeling of spaciousness is that it’s not packed with furniture. Even in a smaller apartment, the designers have chosen to leave quite a bit of floor space empty, for a relaxed, uncluttered feel.

The house was planned for a family of four. Two cubes separated by a passage combine into an “L” shaped house. The front cube, of double height space, holds the public areas : entrance, living room, kitchen, dining room (all on the ground floor) and a study on the first floor. The passage, 4 meters wide, continues the patio, which is the center of the house, and separates the public wing and the private wing. The rear cube, (the private wing) has 3 floors: The ground floor holds a living room, two children rooms, a laundry room and a guests w.c. The 1st floor holds the master bedroom, and a bridge passage to the library (on the front cube). The basement is well lightened and ventilated by a large patio, and holds a guest’s room, a safe room, and a storage room.

The bridge “casts a shadow” on the ground floor, enhanced by a 120 cm wide concrete strip. The kitchen island aligns accordingly. The bridge is composed of white pine wood, and continues as a strip into the master bedroom and the adjacent open bathroom, with concrete flooring on both sides. The tree barks cover the front yard, are also used in the passage and enhance the concrete strip. The swimming pool is covered by marblite and flows into a waterfall towards the bamboo trees. Dry bamboo is used as railings and outdoor walls. The house includes many hanged objects, like swings, as well as outdoor sittings and a bed in the children rooms.

Loblolly House, Taylors Island, Maryland (670 m²)

Loblolly House was inspired by the childhood urge to build tree houses. An effort to bring back the magic of a house in the trees—one that requires climbing up to gain a view—Loblolly House appeals to a primal instinct about how we inhabit space. It also represents a home that is uniquely integrated with its setting among the tall loblolly pines from which it takes its name.

SITE

Positioned between a dense grove of pines and a lush foreground of saltmeadow cordgrass leading to the bay, the house is formed about and within the elements of trees, tall grasses, the sea, the horizon, the sky, and the western sun. The skewed piles upon which the foundation rests mimic the form of the forest, fusing the natural elements of this barrier island to architectural form.

An industrial Portland loft

In 2011 this former grocery, printing press and mechanic’s shop in Portland was turned into a home, creating an industrial loft inspired by those typical of New York. The owners enlisted the help of local firm Emerick Architects, who added a penthouse and roof garden to the building. They lined the walls with 13-foot-high windows that replicate those of a 1930s factory, bringing plenty of natural light into the space.

Inside the space is open-plan, with a huge concrete fireplace acting as a room divider between kitchen and living space, and a sliding steel fire door that can be left open or used to close off the main space.

Almost all materials were locally made or reclaimed – from the cabinets and steel work, to railings and stucco – with the owners wanting an ‘unfinished’ look. The result is a sleek and contemporary interior with accents of vintage – think coffee tables made out of old wooden beams and a vintage urinal-turned-bathroom sink, sitting next to sleek steel and clean white walls.

The industrial aesthetic is seen throughout in the use of track lighting, bare walls, subway tiles and an abundance of steel – but it’s those pieces with character that break up the starkness and turn this loft into a home.

Located on a dense hillside forest in the Santa Rosalía area of Guatemala City, Corallo House integrates the existing forest into the layout of the house. It merges nature into the architectural intervention. The design process began with the aim to preserve the existing trees, in order to have the trees interact with the living space. The floor plan is free of columns and the changes in level adapt to the existing topography. Both façades are mostly glass in order to connect the interior to the exterior. The main structural component is exposed concrete, which shows the rustic texture of the wood formwork, allowing a dialogue between the formal element and the textures of the forest.

Private Tour : Authentic stone house in the heart of Tuscany

In the heart of Tuscany, a beautiful house is out of the ground on the foundations of a genuine ruin abandoned for decades. And to the delight of a French-Italian couple and their child. After having used the services of Italian architect Mateo Panio and those of the designer Elodie Sire, Madame has brought his passion for riding and Monsieur his artwork.

This sumptuous residence enjoys a beautiful location in Tuscany , because it is lost in the middle of nowhere. “There is a village not far away, but the surroundings are completely cleared”. All around, you can see a green landscape consisting of plains, hills and valleys.

The reconstruction of the building from the ruins of a house dating from the late XIXᵉ century was almost exclusively made with recycled materials (copper gutters, old stones and tiles, etc.) found in Tuscany. And that, to remain faithful to the original building and remain in perfect harmony with the landscape and other houses nearby. This explains, for example, the swimming pool, made in the spirit of a natural basin, avoiding flashiness.

532sc-803-TIFF004

Here is one of the views to be enjoyed from the main terrace. As everyone sits naturally on the small stone walls, the designer had the idea of turning them into comfortable seats with custom cushions. As it is here in a Mediterranean region, the owners wanted warm colors that stand out strongly a green environment without breaking harmony.

532sc-803-TIFF005

From the back, you can admire the architectural dimension of this house, almost U-shaped in order to accommodate friends and family in the best conditions, the couple wanted to have two separate houses together in a single dwelling, where you can circulates freely.

532sc-803-TIFF012

This is the first space near the entrance, we discover on arriving home. For the masters of the place, the idea, led by the Italian architect from the early stages of the project was to have a house around which we can turn to enjoy all the views offered by the exceptional situation of the building. Many living areas have been fitted out, at the same time revitalizing the facades, massive.

The couple sought to ensure maximum comfort to its guests. The proof with this pool house, completely dedicated to their families and terrace, furnished in typical Italian style, including briquettes Tuscany ground. The coffee table is made of old wooden door, the designer has mottled before raising on steel feet, specially designed for the occasion.

In the entrance, in the center of the U-shaped architecture, this grand staircase leads to the first floor of the main house.

The wall space is animated by an antique bench and a fork in Tuscany and a pommel horse topped with a saddle imported from Argentina.
The ceiling is characterized by its vaults terracotta briquettes, separated from each other by metal girders .
The stones that are used as floor covering in much of the house are all from the Norman Gallery in Paris. For this volume and almost all of the ground floor, the decorator has favored a resembling Burgundy stone, but warmer with its various shades, from beige and mocha.

The owners being gourmets, they wanted an upscale kitchen, spacious and quasi-professional. All furniture and household appliances is signed La Cornue. The elements are brushed stainless steel, natural oak, with taupe lacquer on some fronts. While being at the forefront of what is done in the area, the room remains friendly through the use of these rather warm tones.

This second living room, the owners wanted cocooning places to watch movies or read a book in peace. Because they have many books and read a lot, they had to create multiple dedicated storage space. Here, the vast oak bookcase, which draws an arch over the door, was designed by Elodie Sire and manufactured on site by an Italian carpenter. Above, a large beam hides a screen in place when one wishes to connect the projector to turn the living room into small cinema…
The right wall is still decorated with a multitude of riding crops that come mainly from Argentina, personal collection of Madame.

On the other side, the living is divided into two parts with, on the right, a corner where we find a black piano and a fireplace near which you can warm up in winter.
On the main wall, the two photos on black, Gonzalo Rivera, emerge from either side of the window. They give a certain depth and volume to remind the black patterns of a large graphic CODIMAT carpet.

532sc-803-TIFF054

On the ground floor, the couple decided to arrange a guest room easily accessible. Designed by Elodie Sire, that canopy bed was made in Italy. The headboard, of bohemian inspiration, is actually a big wall of woven natural fiber, shaped by Holland & Cherry.

532sc-803-TIFF042

Going up one floor by stairs to the entrance, you come to an open and through-room. It serves the parental space, two guest rooms and dormitory of children, while TV room office for these. Very comfortable, a sofa covered with Baxter Annie Pate fabric is leaning against the main wall of the third salon. To animate it, the focus is on a mixture of Rubelli cushions and Ido, which also adds to the comfort of the sofa.

532sc-803-TIFF049

Since it is a holiday house where they receive a lot, the couple wanted more of a dormitory where welcoming several children instead of a single room, only meant to their child. The designer has created a set of six sleeps custom of bleached fir, two drawers beds and two raised beds. On the ground, round Serendipity rugs bring color.

The floor of this guest room, always on the first floor, terra-cotta was posed, typical of Tuscany. A custom headboard separator plays a role between the office and the sleeping area.

The basins of the different bathrooms have been designed by Elodie and custom made in Italy. To fit with a bathroom that parents wished precious and chic, the white stone basin on a vanity consists of a bronze tray and antique tiles from Roger Tallon.

In the master shower, the walls are covered with old mirrors that the designer is used to hunt in batches. They are treated and have different dimensions, which suggest an original layout plan. As for the niche in the wall, it is in black lava stone from Italy.

Above their bathroom and Monsieur’s desk, the bed overlooks a small terrace. For this very private space, the couple wanted purity. On the ground, a white resin was casted while the walls, also white, were coated with lime. A platform of solid oak, on which the bed is positioned, accentuates the Shaker style of the volume meanwhile warming the ground. In the corner, a hanging rattan chair accentuates the natural appearance of the room, while allowing to read, even at night, in the light of a beautiful Serge Mouille black metal floor lamp.

532sc-803-TIFF003

Here we are on the terrace of the master bedroom. Small but charming, it offers further perspectives on the landscape and allows the couple to take the air as needed without necessarily having to leave his room.

A work of art collector, the domain owner is also a wine lover. This explains the development of a cellar where to keep the bottles away. A tasting area has also been built there.

If the large trees near the house were already there, the owners have nevertheless uses a landscaper to take care of their land.
All exterior lighting has however been created by the designer. As the couple wanted something very subtle, that would not settle with the general and traditional harmony of the house, the decorator initially opted for projectors to illuminate the facades. Garden side, very small discrete terminals draw paths. Projectors have been positioned at the foot of the tallest trees in the field, so they can also play a role at night.

532sc-803-TIFF015

Poolside, small spots were placed in the basin and the wall that delimits this space. Again, everything was done to favor a very light rendering.

The owner’s affection for a stone outcropping on her property inspired the design of this house. Conceived as a retreat nestled into the rock, the Pierre (the French word for stone) celebrates the materiality of the site. From certain angles, the house—with its rough materials, encompassing stone, green roof, and surrounding foliage—almost disappears into nature.

The materiality of the built structure—mild steel, smooth concrete, and drywall—create a neutral backdrop for the interior furnishings and artwork and the exterior views to the bay and surrounding landscape.

Throughout the house, the rock protrudes into the space, contrasting with the luxurious textures of the furnishings. Interior and exterior fireplace hearths are carved out of existing stone; leveled on top, they are otherwise left raw. In the master bathroom, water cascades through three polished pools, natural sinks in the existing stone. Off the main space, a powder room is carved out of the rock; a mirror set within a skytube reflects natural light into the space.

Contemporary works of art by Cameron Martin, Jesse Paul Miller, Andres Serrano, Franz West, and Claude Zervas are mounted inside and outside the house. Antique furniture and art objects are complemented by custom pieces. The custom light fixtures are based on the designs of Irene McGowan, a Seattle artist and lighting designer best known for her work with noted Northwest architect Roland Terry. Interiors by Olson Kundig, in collaboration with the client.

Set at a right angle to the main space, a master suite features a custom-designed bed with a leather headboard and footboard set in the middle of floor-to ceiling bookshelves.

“Putting the house in the rock follows a tradition of building on the least productive part of a site, leaving the best parts free for cultivation.”

To set the house deep into the site, portions of the rock outcropping were excavated through a combination of machine work and handwork. The contractor used large drills to set the outline of the building, then used dynamite, hydraulic chippers, and wire saws and other hand tools, working with finer and finer implements as construction progressed. Excavated rock was reused as crushed aggregate in all the stonework, a reminder of the building process, while huge pieces of rock were employed for the carport structure.

THE FALLINGWATER HOUSE, MILL RUN, PENNSYLVANIA

falling-water-fall-house-L

THE FALLINGWATER HOUSE, MILL RUN, PENNSYLVANIA

In Mill Run, Pennsylvania in the Bear Run Nature Reserve where a stream flows at 1298 feet above sea level and suddenly breaks to fall at 30 feet, Frank Lloyd Wright designed an extraordinary house known as Fallingwater that redefined the relationship between man, architecture, and nature. The house was built as a weekend home for owners Mr. Edgar Kaufmann, his wife, and their son, whom he developed a friendship with through their son who was studying at Wright’s school, the Taliesin Fellowship. The waterfall had been the family’s retreat for fifteen years and when they commissioned Wright to design the house they envisioned one across from the waterfall, so that they could have it in their view. Instead, Wright integrated the design of the house with the waterfall itself, placing it right on top of it to make it a part of the Kaufmanns’ lives.

Wright’s admiration for Japanese architecture was important in his inspiration for this house, along with most of his work. Just like in Japanese architecture, Wright wanted to create harmony between man and nature, and his integration of the house with the waterfall was successful in doing so. The house was meant to compliment its site while still competing with the drama of the falls and their endless sounds of crashing water. The power of the falls is always felt, not visually but through sound, as the breaking water could constantly be heard throughout the entire house.

Wright revolved the design of the house around the fireplace, the hearth of the home which he considered to be the gathering place for the family. Here a rock cuts into the fireplace, physically bringing in the waterfall into the house. He also brings notice to this concept by dramatically extending the chimney upwards to make it the highest point on the exterior of the house.

Fallingwater consists of two parts: The main house of the clients which was built between 1936-1938, and the guest room which was completed in 1939. The original house contains simple rooms furnished by Wright himself, with an open living room and compact kitchen on the first floor, and three small bedrooms located on the second floor. The third floor was the location of the study and bedroom of Edgar Jr., the Kaufmann’s son. The rooms all relate towards the house’s natural surroundings, and the living room even has steps that lead directly into the water below. The circulation through the house consists of dark, narrow passageways, intended this way so that people experience a feeling of compression when compared to that of expansion the closer they get to the outdoors. The ceilings of the rooms are low, reaching only up to 6’4″ in some places, in order to direct the eye horizontally to look outside. The beauty of these spaces is found in their extensions towards nature, done with long cantilevered terraces.

KENTUCK KNOB HOUSE

Kentuck Knob

Kentuck Knob

KentuckWestFront

KentucKnob

Designed on a hexagonal module, Kentuck Knob is a small, one story Usonian house. Usonian, meaning affordable for the average American, was a signature design of Frank Lloyd Wright. Both dramatic and serene, the house, situated just below the crest of the hill, appears almost part of the mountain itself and stands 2,050 feet above sea level.

“No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other”. Frank Lloyd Wright

Kentuck Knob’s construction materials of native sandstone and tidewater red cypress blend naturally with the surroundings. The fully functional kitchen is the architectural core of the home. Its walls of stone not only anchor the two wings of the house but they also rise to penetrate the horizontal line of the copper roof. An open floor plan, cantilevered overhangs, and great expanses of glass effortlessly integrate the inside with the outside. Stretching to the east, just beyond the back terrace, is a breathtaking panorama of the Youghiogheny River Gorge and the beautiful Laurel Highlands mountains that surround it.

The result of a warehouse conversion, this eye-catching modern duplex pays tribute to the notions of space and openness. Here is more on the renovation process from the architects : “Opaque guardrails at the sleeping mezzanine were replaced with frameless glass guardrails in order to provide a direct visual connection to the living room below.

From the architect. The clients approached Feldman Architecture to design a retreat for eventual retirement and visits from their grown children – a retreat befitting the natural beauty of the location in the Santa Lucia Preserve, a 20,000 acre private development and land trust near Carmel, California. The clients were meticulous in the selection of the site, searching for two years for a spectacular piece of land which was flat enough to accommodate living on one level. In an initial meeting with Feldman Architecture, the clients noted their vision of butterflies alighting on the meadow site which the architects took as inspiration. They also expressed a desire to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces with a simple, modern aesthetic and to provide separate spaces for the growing family.

Sitting lightly on the land, the house is divided into three smaller pavilions which are capped by expressive, butterfly roofs. Each pavilion has a separate function: the central pavilion houses the main living, dining, and cooking spaces, while two other pavilions provide for sleeping, bathing, and relaxing. The structures are modest in square footage, yet each expands into an outdoor room that open up to dramatic views of the canyon below and hills beyond.

In this project, we met with the newly built facility. The building modern design and project which we had complete freedom in designing the interior. Living room, dining room and kitchen have no physical barriers so it was very important to arrange this area as a dominant visual detail of the house. The principle of the design was related to the partial minimalism and modern aestheticism.

01

Starting from the living room, we tried to transfer the form from one area to another. An example is a fireplace whose elements are repeated in the dining room and in the gallery. The main effect represents a wall with a fireplace that is made of plasterboard panels coated with spatulato.

02

03

Kitchen as the last part of the living space continent, was designed according to the principles of kitchen islands. Materials which dominate here are ebony wood, brushed and polished aluminum and glass.

04

Above the dining room extends a gallery that is intended for the rest and relaxation. We used the advantage of the large ceiling height to our advantage so that the wall of the fireplace became a support for the canvas for the living room version of home theatre.

05

06

07

An interesting detail in the kitchen is an element of artificial greenhouse garden. The master bedroom, also great in transparency, is linked with an open connection to wardrobe and bathroom. Convenience of the glass panels was used for the possibility of direct exit to the courtyard, which is discretely separated from the bedroom.

The space is certainly not huge, but the way it is organized is keeps the distinct areas separate with a small living room/entertainment area (perfect for gaming) nestled in next to a home office, ideal for those late nights working with a deadline looming. Of course, the corner desk with a sleek task chair is also perfect for PC gaming.

Away from the work area is the kitchen and another sofa, this one without a television. This way, the occupant can easily separate work from relaxation, business from pleasure. The sliding paneling that runs between the kitchen and sofa has a bit of edge to it while still serving its purpose well.

The bedroom is unmistakably masculine, using a dark gray color palette to make everything feel private and relaxing. The abstract painting over the headboard gives just enough color while the fabric-colored light fixtures are sure to emit only the most flattering tones.

The accessories and details throughout the house give it a distinct personality. The tiled backsplash in the kitchen has a bit of country chic sensibility while the polka dot shower curtain and asymmetrical tiling on the bathroom floor offer their own playful whimsy.

A 2 BEDROOM FLAT IN KIEV WTH SLEEK CONTEMPORARY FEATURES

With 198 square meters (2131 square feet) available, plenty of design work went into creating this open and vibrant two bedroom loft in Kiev. The space was designed by the architecture and design team at Ukrainian-based Soesthetic Group. Although there are plenty of fashionable and even trendy elements in use – such as white painted brick and clean, contemporary lines – the overall feeling in the home is an overall timeless kind of style that is youthful and lasting.

A top floor house, the pitched ceiling creates its own design challenges but also adds immediate interest to the main living area. By bisecting the large room with a floating wood platform, the design has managed to create separate spaces for work and relaxing without putting up any full walls. This makes the pitched ceiling more stylish and less closed off. A couple of carefully places skylights and plenty of bright white paint help, too.

The television is hung from a custom mesh surface that separates the living room from the rest of the home but also lets light and air pass through. Next to that is a contemporary fireplace that is almost a modern spin on an old coal burning stove.

The kitchen is bright and a bit funky, with a concrete chopping block and sleek wire-backed bar chairs. Small dangling lights have a bit of that Edison bulb aesthetic without taking it over the top into hipster territory.

The home’s entryway is the perfect amount of minimal. Concrete flooring and stairs, coupled with a custom wood bench where people can easily put on and take off dirty boots and hang up heavy winter coats is a sight for sore eyes in the harsh Kiev winters.

In the master suite we find things to be a bit softer with cozy grays dominating the color palette and deliciously soft fabrics on the bed. Some floating shelving makes for a bit of modernism while the ensuite bath is luxuriously simple.

Although set in an incredible seaside location in Cronulla, the timber weatherboard cottage was in dire need of some internal modifications. Over the course of eight months, our brief expanded from just sourcing furniture to building works, customizing joinery, selecting artwork as well as hand selecting the perfect pieces to enhance the property’s location. Our major design interjection was the design and installation of a 10 meter long floating concrete bench, to bridge the two living areas and encourage a more engaging, communicative experience for the family.
